Eviction Looming: Batu Caves Community Appeals for Royal Intervention
A desperate plea for help echoes from the heart of Batu Caves. Residents of a historic Indian settlement are facing eviction, and their homes are on the brink of demolition. But who will hear their cry for justice?
In a dramatic turn of events, a memorandum has been submitted to the Selangor palace, imploring the royal family to intervene in this imminent crisis. The residents, settled near the intersection of Jalan Bunga Raya 2 and Jalan Tepi Sungai, have been issued eviction notices by the Gombak land and district office, citing unlawful occupation of government land.
But here's where it gets controversial. VK Sri Ramesh, president of Malaysia Tamilar Munnetra Kalagam, revealed that the settlement has deep historical roots. It was established by colonial authorities to accommodate Tamil laborers before Malaya's independence. Over the years, the community has been granted various residency permits and even legal land titles.
"From 1985 to 1989, 39 residents became legal landowners, a status that should have secured their homes until 2046. And in 2013, an additional 77 families received a 99-year lease," Sri Ramesh explained. Yet, the authorities plan to raze their houses on November 25, displacing 44 families.
The community feels let down by the Selangor government, as the menteri besar's office allegedly refused to meet with the residents. Sri Ramesh passionately appealed, "We ask for fairness and compassion. This settlement has a rich history and legal recognition. No one should be forced out of their homes through intimidation or political tactics."
And this is the part most people miss—the potential impact on the community's cultural heritage. The settlement's origins date back to colonial times, and its residents have contributed significantly to the area's development. But will their voices be heard?
The ball is now in the royal court, with the memorandum delivered to Istana Bukit Kayangan. Will the Sultan respond to the community's plea? Stay tuned as this story unfolds, and feel free to share your thoughts on this delicate matter.
