The NHL trade rumors are buzzing with the potential movement of star defenseman Quinn Hughes. At just 26 years old, Hughes' departure from the Vancouver Canucks seems increasingly likely as the team struggles with a disappointing 11-16-3 record, ranking second-worst in the league. With 22 points (2 goals, 20 assists) in 25 games this season, Hughes is eligible for a contract extension next summer, but the Canucks may opt to trade him now to maximize their return and avoid the risk of losing him for nothing.
Enter Elliotte Friedman, hockey's preeminent insider, who has floated the Washington Capitals as a potential suitor. Friedman suggests that the Capitals, with their current roster and the uncertainty surrounding Alexander Ovechkin's future, might be willing to take a chance on Hughes.
"This is a special time for the Capitals," Friedman said. "They could potentially see this as an opportunity to make a bold move."
The Capitals have the cap space to accommodate Hughes' $7.85 million cap hit, and with Pierre-Luc Dubois on long-term injured reserve, they could free up even more room. Additionally, the team is set to have $10.25 million in trade deadline space, providing ample room to fit Hughes into their lineup by March 6.
However, the left side of the Capitals' defense is crowded, with players like Jakob Chychrun, Martin Fehervary, and Rasmus Sandin already in place. The right side, with John Carlson and Trevor van Riemsdyk, is less crowded, but the team will need to address the potential loss of these players as free agents next summer.
The price to acquire Hughes is expected to be steep, given his prime years and his former 92-point season. Friedman suggests that the Canucks will likely seek a center and a replacement defenseman in return.
"The Canucks will want a D to replace Hughes, so teams with strong centers and defensive prospects will be in the mix," Friedman explained.
The Capitals have the prospects and young talent to meet these needs. In the center, they have prospects like Ilya Protas and Milton Gästrin, as well as NHL-ready players like Connor McMichael and Justin Sourdif. On defense, Cole Hutson, a left-handed offensive defenseman like Hughes, stands out, along with Rasmus Sandin and recent draft picks Leon Muggli and Ryan Chesley.
The risk for the Capitals is that Hughes may not sign an extension to stay beyond next season. He won't be eligible for an extension until July, so any trade this season would be a gamble.
Washington is not alone in their interest, with the New Jersey Devils being the most speculated team. Quinn's brothers, Jack and Luke Hughes, are already signed long-term with the Devils, and Jack has expressed his desire to play with Quinn at some point.
Other potential suitors include the Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, and Chicago Blackhawks.
