Winter's icy embrace is set to sweep through the nation's capital this weekend, with a chilling forecast that will leave residents shivering. But here's the twist: a few inches of snowfall are poised to transform the D.C. area into a winter wonderland, just as temperatures take a nosedive!
The forecast paints a picture of a wintry landscape, with 1 to 3 inches of snow expected to blanket most of the region by Sunday morning. The District's southern and western areas may see slightly less snow, but the cold temperatures will ensure a picturesque scene.
And this is where it gets tricky: the combination of snow and frigid temperatures could spell trouble for commuters. Icy roads are a real possibility, especially as the snow transitions to rain and ice during the evening hours on Saturday.
"We're in for a wintry mix, but the cold air will dominate," explains Mark Peña, 7News First Alert Meteorologist. "After a mild start to the day, the evening will bring a blast of winter with snow, rain, and ice."
The snow's arrival is timed for after 10 p.m. on Saturday, as temperatures plummet into the 20s. By Sunday morning, the snowfall should subside, leaving behind a fresh layer of snow that will linger due to the cold conditions.
"It's going to be a chilly one, no matter where you are in the D.C. area," Peña assures. "Sunday will struggle to warm up, with temperatures barely reaching freezing."
D.C. is already gearing up for this wintery onslaught. Brining operations and snow plow preparations are underway to ensure the city is ready. But the cold doesn't stop there—bitter wind chills are expected to grip the area on Sunday and Monday, with temperatures feeling like the teens and single digits.
This upcoming cold snap follows the season's first snowfall last week, which left a similar amount of snow across the region. But this time, the cold air is here to stay, at least for a few days.
Friday sets the stage with dry conditions and lighter winds, but temperatures will dip into the low 30s. The evening sky will be clear, but the cold will linger.
"Friday will be another reminder of winter's chill," says Whelan. "Temperatures will be well below normal, and the wind chill will make it feel even colder."
The cold trend has been persistent since Thanksgiving, according to Peña, with temperatures consistently below average.
