A communications breakdown in Greece triggered a cascade of disruptions, forcing the closure of its airspace and causing widespread flight cancellations and delays. Authorities are still working to understand the root cause of the radio communication failure that occurred on a Sunday morning, leading to the temporary halt of all arrivals and departures. Some departures have since been permitted, but inbound flights were either diverted or instructed to return to their origin points. Athens' main airport bore the brunt of the impact, while Thessaloniki airport was entirely shut down.
The timing of this disruption raised immediate concerns, as many travelers faced the prospect of not being able to return home before the start of the work week. One passenger at Athens International Airport, scheduled to fly to London via Stockholm, shared their frustration, highlighting the potential consequences of missing important commitments. The passenger also raised a crucial question: who would cover the additional costs incurred due to the travel disruptions? This uncertainty added to the already stressful situation.
More than 90 flights were affected in and out of Athens airport alone, although some flights have since resumed. An airport staff member informed the BBC that 35 aircraft per hour were being allowed to take off, but inbound flights were still unable to land. Flights from Dublin, Barcelona, and Paris were ordered to return to their airports of origin, while services from Copenhagen and Malta were canceled altogether. Other arrivals into Athens were put on standby, and flights in and out of other Greek airports were also affected. For instance, three flights from Heraklion airport on the island of Crete, including one to Munich, were delayed.
Most inbound flights were being diverted to Turkey or canceled outright. The disruption occurred during a busy period for air travel in and out of Athens, which typically handles over 600 scheduled flights per day, as people returned from winter holidays. In the midst of the chaos, passengers expressed their frustration over a lack of information. One passenger lamented the absence of updates, while another, whose flight to Rhodes had to turn back to Athens, reported a complete lack of information.
Domestic travelers might have considered Greece's rail network as an alternative, but this would have significantly increased travel time. The disruption is believed to be related to the radio system used by air traffic controllers to communicate with aircraft in their airspace. Panagiotis Psarros, chair of the Association of Greek Air Traffic Controllers, stated that all frequencies were "suddenly lost," preventing communication with aircraft in the sky. An initial investigation by the Greek security services suggested the problem might be due to the failure of an antenna in the Gerania Mountains near Athens. Italy, Turkey, and Cyprus are assisting Greece in managing the situation.
