In the heart of Perth, Australia, a residential masterpiece emerges, its design inspired by the city's industrial port. The Henville Street House, crafted by Philip Stejskal Architecture, showcases a unique blend of functionality and aesthetics. But here's where it gets intriguing: the exterior, a nod to the Fremantle cargo port, features corrugated metal cladding and steel awnings, creating a striking industrial vibe.
The architects faced a challenge: designing a family home on a compact urban plot while ensuring privacy. Their ingenious solution? A patio-centric layout with a steel frame, destined to be embraced by nature. As the studio founder, Philip Stejskal, reveals, the design is a budget-conscious response to the site's constraints. The corrugated iron cladding pays homage to the area's historical worker cottages, offering durability against coastal conditions and cost-effectiveness.
The house is strategically positioned to accommodate the site's one-meter level change. The living, dining, and kitchen areas are sunken, leading up to the garden, where a large sill transforms into a cozy seating area beside expansive glass doors. This seamless transition from indoors to the patio, dubbed an "outdoor room" by Stejskal, is sheltered by a towering steel frame.
As time passes, the upper frame will be enveloped by climbing plants, thanks to metal grilles, which also form a low fence around the house. This steel structure, shaded by a retractable awning, extends to a terrace for the first-floor bedrooms and continues to the front, providing a small awning above the entrance and garage.
Stejskal elaborates on the "outdoor room's" evolution, where a vertical trellis will turn green and a retractable fabric awning will provide shelter. This dynamic space adapts to the seasons, welcoming sunlight in winter and offering protection during summer, creating an additional outdoor living area.
Inside, the industrial exterior gives way to a softer palette, with pale curtains and dark Australian hardwoods for storage and wall linings. The garden-facing facades feature narrow vertical battens, a design element echoed at the base of a front window.
Australia's architectural scene offers more surprises. Studio Bright's Melbourne creation, the Hedge and Arbour House, features metal mesh screens destined to be cloaked by climbing plants, forming a natural shade. Other notable Australian residences include the Bondi House, a steel "kit of parts" by Nick Kent Design, and an off-grid Victorian Alps home by Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors.
