Hold onto your hats, car enthusiasts! Mahindra Australia has just revealed its sales figures for the past year, and the results are turning heads. The Indian auto brand has impressively surged, marking a significant milestone in the automotive landscape. But, here's where it gets interesting…
Mahindra's sales experienced an impressive 11.6% increase last year, propelling them into the top 30 brands in the market. Now, you might be wondering, how did they achieve this? Well, the company doesn't typically share its sales data with the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) for the monthly VFACTS reports. This makes them one of the few brands, including the likes of Cadillac, Smart, and Xpeng, that keep their numbers close to the vest.
However, due to their strong performance, Mahindra decided to release a press release detailing their sales. With a total of 4653 sales, up from 4170 in the previous year, Mahindra secured the 29th position. The company is quick to point out that they would have been in the top 20 if prestige brands were excluded. This places them just below Skoda (4808) and newcomer Geely (5010), but ahead of Renault (4569) and KGM (4116).
And this is the part most people miss: The overall market saw a modest increase of only 0.3%. Mahindra attributes its growth to the newest model, the XUV 3XO small SUV, which launched in July. They haven't provided a detailed breakdown of sales by model, but they did note that the XUV700 mid-size SUV, currently Australia's most affordable seven-seat SUV, has exceeded 7000 retail sales since its launch in June 2023.
Mahindra has been selling SUVs and utes in Australia for 20 years, but last year they did so without their most well-known model: the Pik-Up. Instead, it's a range of newer SUVs – the XUV 3XO, XUV700, and the body-on-frame Scorpio off-roader – that are driving the brand's success.
Looking ahead, Mahindra has confirmed plans to re-enter the ute segment in 2027 or 2028 with a new 'global' ute, specifically designed with the Australian market in mind.
