Matt Damon Reveals Clint Eastwood's Unique Directing Style (2026)

Matt Damon Recalls Clint Eastwood's Unconventional Filmmaking Style: 'He's Not a Big Takes Guy'

In a recent podcast appearance, Matt Damon shared a memorable anecdote about his collaboration with legendary filmmaker Clint Eastwood. During their first day on set for one of Eastwood's films, Damon expressed his excitement about working with his idol, only to be met with a surprising response.

"So I was playing a South African rugby player, and that’s a really tough accent to do," Damon recalled, describing his role in Eastwood's 2009 film "Invictus." He spent months preparing for the part, working with a dialect coach to perfect the accent of rugby player Francois Pienaar. "It was a lot of work," he said.

"I showed up [on set] and I am ready and it’s my chance to work with one of my heroes," Damon continued. "The very first take, I did it… There are a number of ways I’m thinking of doing the scene and he just goes, ‘Cut, print, move on.’ I go, ‘Hang on, hang on, hang on, boss. I want to, you know, I want to do another one. That was the first one!’ He goes, ‘Why? You wanna waste everybody’s time?’ And I went, ‘No, I guess we’re moving on.'"

Damon's surprise at Eastwood's response was understandable, given the director's reputation for not allowing many takes during filming. Eastwood is known for his efficient and no-nonsense approach to filmmaking, often moving on to the next shot quickly.

"There was a kindness to it," Damon emphasized, calling Eastwood "a lovely guy." He explained that Eastwood's mindset was focused on not overworking his crew, ensuring they weren't exhausted on every shot.

"His whole mentality was… your crew will go to the ends of the Earth for you as long as you’re not taxing them on every shot," Damon said.

Eastwood's approach to filmmaking is certainly unconventional, and it's a topic that sparks interesting discussions. What do you think about directors who don't allow many takes? Do you agree with Eastwood's philosophy, or do you prefer a more traditional approach? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
