In a thrilling moment that left fans on the edge of their seats, the New England Patriots made a bold move during the AFC Championship Game against the Broncos. With seconds ticking away in the first half, the Patriots attempted a record-tying field goal, leaving everyone wondering: Could they make history? But here's the kicker (pun intended): it was no ordinary kick.
Andres Borregales, the Patriots' rookie kicker, was given the green light for a 63-yard field goal attempt, a distance that had only been tried twice before in NFL playoff history. This daring move by coach Mike Vrabel was a true test of Borregales' abilities, especially considering the high-pressure situation. A risky decision, some might say.
The previous two attempts at this distance had ended in disappointment. In 2018, Greg Zuerlein of the Rams missed a 63-yarder against the Cowboys, and way back in 1989, Mike Cofer of the 49ers suffered the same fate against the Vikings. But was it a wise choice for the Patriots to go for it?
Borregales, a promising young talent, had shown his worth during the regular season, nailing all four of his attempts from 50 yards or more. Denver's altitude, known to help kickers, might have been a factor in Vrabel's decision, as three of the NFL's 16 longest field goals have been made there.
Despite the increasing frequency of 60-yard field goals in the regular season, the NFL playoffs have never witnessed one. The 2025 season saw six such kicks, with Cam Little setting an NFL record with a 67-yarder. Yet, this success hasn't transferred to the postseason.
The longest field goal in NFL playoff history stands at 58 yards, a feat achieved only twice. Pete Stoyanovich of the Dolphins first set the record in 1990, and Graham Gano of the Panthers tied it in 2019. So close, yet so far for Borregales.
While he didn't break the record, Borregales did contribute a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter, giving the Patriots a slender lead. With the Super Bowl on the line, the game in Denver was a nail-biter.
