The Battle for PDP's Future: A Tale of Two Factions
In a dramatic turn of events, a faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is calling for an emergency meeting, igniting a political firestorm. Led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, this group has summoned the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) to gather on Tuesday at the PDP's national headquarters in Abuja.
The notice, signed by Samuel Anyanwu, a close ally of Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, sets the stage for a crucial gathering. The BoT is scheduled to convene at 11 a.m., followed by the NEC session at 2 p.m., with attendance being mandatory due to the gravity of the matters at hand.
This invitation marks the 103rd emergency NEC meeting in the party's history, indicating the urgency and significance of the issues to be addressed. Lere Olayinka, Wike's media aide, shared the notice on his X page, further fueling the political intrigue.
But here's where it gets controversial: over the weekend, another faction, led by Umar Damagum, the immediate past PDP national chairman, held their own national convention in Ibadan. This faction took a bold step by expelling Wike, Anyanwu, and Ayo Fayose, the former governor of Ekiti, from the party. Along with them, several other prominent members, including Umar Bature, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and Mao Ohabunwa, were also removed.
The convention was attended by several governors, including Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, and Seyi Makinde of Oyo. Notable figures like Ladi Adebutu, the PDP's Ogun state governorship candidate in 2023, and Kabiru Turaki, the consensus candidate for national chairman, were also present.
However, not everyone was in agreement. Governors Ademola Adeleke of Osun and Agbu Kefas of Taraba were notably absent. Additionally, Caleb Mutfwang and Ahmadu Fintiri, who were at the venue, distanced themselves from the expulsion of the FCT minister.
In a statement released on Saturday evening, Olayinka accused those at the convention of "starting dirty December in November." He added, "One can't but ignore whatever comes out of their mouths." The spokesperson for the FCT minister further emphasized that the decisions made at the event were irrelevant, stating, "They are free to say anything."
The Wike-led faction had attempted to halt the convention through legal means, but the other faction secured a high court judgment in Oyo, allowing the event to proceed. This legal battle adds another layer of complexity to the already tense political landscape within the PDP.
