Rece Davis vs. CFP Chair: Unraveling the Notre Dame Snub Mystery (2026)

Rece Davis Grills CFP Chair Over Controversial Notre Dame Snub

The College Football Playoff selection committee faced intense scrutiny on Sunday after making a highly debated decision. During ESPN's CFP Selection Show, host Rece Davis questioned committee chair Hunter Yurachek about the criteria behind their picks.

When the final CFP bracket was unveiled, Miami was selected, and Notre Dame was notably omitted. Both teams boasted identical 10-2 records and comparable metrics. However, in Week 1, the Hurricanes emerged victorious over the Fighting Irish with a score of 27-24. In earlier weeks, Notre Dame had consistently ranked higher than Miami, but the final rankings saw a reversal of this trend. Davis sought clarification from Yurachek.

Yurachek explained that after BYU's loss to Texas Tech in the Big 12 title game, the Cougars were placed below Miami by the committee. Once Miami and Notre Dame were adjacent in the rankings, the committee proceeded to evaluate the head-to-head matchup, ultimately favoring Miami over Notre Dame. Davis highlighted this point, emphasizing the committee's ranking methodology.

"But Hunter, your ranking process doesn't merely involve teams listing their top 25 and then summing the results," Davis stated. "The head-to-head comparison, by definition, necessitates placing these teams in the same group for evaluation prior to this point. I have no issue with the outcome; I'm inquiring about the process. So, you're indicating that the head-to-head comparison was only considered once the teams were ranked side by side. This seems to differ from the process of ordering and ranking teams that you follow."

Davis accurately pointed out the underlying issue, questioning the illogical thought process. Yurachek attempted to respond, but his explanation fell short of satisfying many.

Yurachek's response was convoluted, suggesting that it took a prolonged period for Miami and Notre Dame to draw closer in the rankings following Miami's losses earlier in the season. Once they inched closer, the committee finally assessed the head-to-head metric. However, Davis pressed further, seeking a more comprehensive explanation.

"Okay, but I still need a more detailed explanation of why this matters," Davis said. "It's accurate to state that, prior to this weekend, Miami and Notre Dame were in the same group for evaluation. Is that correct?"

"Yes, Rece," Yurachek confirmed.

"Then, why did they need to be ranked side by side without any teams between them for the head-to-head comparison to be decisive?" Davis inquired.

"As mentioned in last week's rankings, we believed Notre Dame to be superior to BYU and deserved a higher ranking than BYU. We thought BYU deserved a higher ranking than Miami, and that's how it was structured," Yurachek explained. "Following the championship game in the Big 12 and BYU's performance against Texas Tech, we felt Miami deserved a higher ranking than BYU. Then, there was the direct head-to-head comparison of those teams, with Miami and Notre Dame ranked 10th and 11th, respectively, in our poll."

The full exchange can be viewed in the tweet below.

The answer, however, fell short of appeasing those dissatisfied with the outcome, particularly angry Notre Dame fans. Despite Davis's relentless questioning, Yurachek failed to provide a satisfactory explanation.
