Penang DAP leader sounds alarm after Sabah election disaster!
The recent Sabah state election results have sent shockwaves through the political landscape, with the Democratic Action Party (DAP) suffering a devastating defeat. Bukit Tambun DAP chief, Teoh Seang Hooi, is urging his party and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition to take heed and reconnect with voters before it's too late.
A Wake-up Call for Penang DAP
Teoh believes the Sabah DAP's loss of all eight contested seats in the November 29 election should serve as a stark warning for the Penang DAP. He reminded the party of the 2023 election setback, where the PH-Barisan Nasional alliance won only 29 seats, a decline from the 37 seats won in 2018.
But here's where it gets controversial: Teoh highlights unresolved issues that worry Chinese voters, including justice for the late Teoh Beng Hock and the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC). At the grassroots level, Teoh plans to propose a resolution at the upcoming biennial election, urging Penang PH to establish a task force to engage with voters ahead of the general election. He wants to understand the sentiments of all voters, not just the Chinese and Indian communities.
Penang DAP organizing secretary Phee Boon Chee shares concerns about a potential 'spillover effect' from the Sabah defeat, necessitating damage control. He alleges that critics are spreading the narrative that DAP is losing core support, which is influencing some voters.
An anonymous senior DAP member reveals that certain leaders, especially Indian representatives, have become disconnected from grassroots voters and overly reliant on Chinese support. They suggest building a dedicated team to cultivate Indian voter loyalty.
DAP's Influence and Future Challenges
DAP currently holds significant power in Penang, Selangor, and Perak, but its presence is limited in other states. In Johor, they hold 12 seats but are not part of the state government, and in Melaka and Sarawak, their influence is minimal. The Sabah election saw DAP lose all eight candidates and six former strongholds, leaving them without state assembly representation.
At the federal level, DAP is the second-largest party with 40 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, trailing only the opposition PAS with 43 seats.
