Nebraska football has been in a state of mediocrity for the past decade, a stark contrast to its glorious past. The once-proud program, synonymous with consistent winning, has struggled to find its footing, posting a record of 42-62 since 2016. This decline can be attributed to a myriad of factors, each contributing to the team's inability to compete at the highest level. In my opinion, the biggest reason for Nebraska's mediocrity is the dysfunction at the top. The athletic director, Bill Moos, was hamstrung by interference from the Regents, particularly Jim Pillen, who squashed Moos' pursuit of Dana Altman for the basketball job. This lack of stability and leadership has had a ripple effect on the entire program. Additionally, the hiring of Scott Frost as head coach was a controversial decision, with his contract extension coming without consulting Moos. Frost's tenure has been mediocre at best, and his contract renewal ultimately cost the school precious dollars and prolonged the agony of his abysmal tenure. Another significant issue is the neglect of special teams. Nebraska has spent much of the last decade treating special teams like an afterthought, instead of an area where they can gain an advantage. This has led to close losses and a sense of ill-preparation, rather than good fortune. The lack of development is another critical factor. Nebraska has failed to develop its athletes into football players, with few doing more with less than Nebraska while Big Ten neighbors operate as the antithesis. This is compounded by the advent of NIL and the Transfer Portal, which has led to players routinely transferring out in search of quicker playing time and richer deals. The psychological fragility of the team is also a significant issue. Nebraska fans know what it looks like: one bad play becoming several, a turnover becoming a quarter-long spiral, a winnable game suddenly feeling like an inevitable loss. This has infected multiple staffs, particularly Frost's, and has yet to be vanquished. In conclusion, Nebraska's mediocrity is a result of a combination of factors, including dysfunction at the top, neglect of special teams, lack of development, psychological fragility, and puzzling assistant hires. It is time for the program to get its act together and reclaim its place as a consistent winner.
