Unveiling 'The Den': An International Artist's Masterpiece at Scoil Mhuire (2026)

A Magical Transformation: Unveiling an Outdoor Classroom Fit for a Fairy Tale

In a stroke of luck, the students of Scoil Mhuire in Stranorlar experienced a day of pure enchantment on Friday the 13th. Books were temporarily forgotten as the school community came together to celebrate their remarkable achievements.

The highlight of the day was the grand unveiling of an extraordinary outdoor learning space, a masterpiece crafted by the renowned artist Alex Pentek.

This stainless-steel canopy, with its intricate designs inspired by local leaves, is a testament to the collaborative effort between the artist and the school children. The smooth wooden seating area swirls gracefully, creating a captivating environment that encourages outdoor learning and exploration.

Alex Pentek, an artist of international acclaim, has left his mark on public art installations across the globe, from Ontario to Brisbane and Washington DC. Scoil Mhuire is honored to have such a remarkable work of art within its grounds, knowing it will inspire and captivate generations of students to come.

Fr. Kieran McAteer blessed this outdoor sanctuary, now affectionately known as 'The Den'. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony was a heartwarming affair, led by Principal Eoghan Roarty, artist Alex Pentek, and two enthusiastic students, Siún Alexander and Farida Hamada Bayoumi, amidst the cheers of their five hundred classmates.

But here's where it gets even more exciting! The children's celebrations continued as they raised two flags, now proudly flying high above the school gates. These flags symbolize the successful completion of two significant initiatives that have been a focus at Scoil Mhuire for many months.

The Green School Flag, raised by Angela Gallinagh, a beloved retired teacher, represents the school's commitment to environmental sustainability and its impressive achievement of ten Green Flags.

And this is the part most people miss... The Primary Climate Ambassadors flag, proudly flown alongside, signifies the school's dedication to climate action. Through recycling, reducing food waste, and creating natural habitats, the students, guided by Luke Cape, have taken meaningful steps towards a greener future.

Additionally, the Cineáltas flag, raised by Gerard Mc Hugh, a long-time member of the school community, recognizes the school's efforts in addressing bullying. Under the leadership of Noelle Moy, Scoil Mhuire promotes a culture of kindness, bravery, and respect, embodying the spirit of the Bí Cineálta (Be Kind) policy.

The day's festivities concluded with a movie and popcorn afternoon, organized by the Student Council, coordinated by Sinéad Gallen. A perfect ending to a day filled with joy, inspiration, and a sense of community.

This project, funded by the Percent for Art programme through the Department of Education and Youth, was brought to life with the support of Teresa Mc Nulty, the project coordinator, and key stakeholders including Traolach O’Fionnainn, County Arts Officer, Francis P. Quinn, chairperson of the Board of Management, and Gregg Smeaton, architect.

So, what do you think? Is this outdoor learning space a work of art that inspires and motivates? Or is it just a nice addition to the school grounds? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
