Ready to be surprised? Valve's upcoming Steam Machine, designed to bring PC gaming to your living room, might not be the budget-friendly console experience you're hoping for. Recent discussions have shed light on the pricing strategy, and it's a bit more complex than you might think.
Earlier this month, when Valve unveiled its Steam Machine, some industry analysts suggested a 'loss leader' pricing strategy. This involves selling the hardware at a lower price to encourage software sales, similar to how consoles are often priced. But here's where it gets controversial... Valve's Pierre-Loup Griffais, in an interview with the YouTube channel Skill Up, has dismissed this approach. He stated that the Steam Machine will be priced more in line with the current PC market.
Griffais explained that the Steam Machine's AMD Zen 4 CPU and RDNA3 GPU are designed to outperform the bottom 70 percent of PCs based on Valve's hardware survey. This means the Steam Machine will pack a punch! He further added that consumers should expect to pay a price similar to what they would for a desktop PC with comparable specifications.
"If you build a PC from parts and get to basically the same level of performance, that’s the general price window that we aim to be at," Griffais stated.
This sentiment was echoed by Linus Sebastian on the WAN Show podcast. Sebastian suggested to Valve representatives that a heavily subsidized price point would make the Steam Machine a more appealing product. When he mentioned a console-style price of around $500, the response wasn't enthusiastic.
Forget about $500!
So, how much will it cost? We can estimate the price by looking at comparable desktop components. A build with a Ryzen 5 7600X CPU and a Radeon RX 7600 GPU would likely push the price into the $700+ range. This puts the Steam Machine in competition with the likes of the pricey PS5 Pro, even though some estimates suggest the internal components cost around $400 to $500.
