West Mercia Police is urging drivers to exercise caution and responsibility during the festive season. In a recent statement, the police force emphasized the importance of making sensible decisions, particularly regarding alcohol consumption and driving.
Insp. Col. Robinson, a representative from West Mercia Police, highlighted a concerning trend. He noted that people often overlook the fundamental message of not drinking and driving, which has led to tragic consequences. Over the past three years, 37 lives have been lost, and 232 individuals have sustained serious injuries in Shropshire, Herefordshire, and Worcestershire due to collisions involving alcohol or drugs.
To address this issue, West Mercia Police will intensify patrols during the Christmas period, aiming to ensure the safe return of individuals to their homes. Insp. Robinson acknowledged the allure of festive celebrations and gatherings with loved ones but advised drivers to refrain from consuming alcohol. He emphasized the unpredictability of alcohol's effects, as different beverages and individual tolerances make it challenging to determine a 'safe' limit.
The police's concern is evident, as they have already arrested 186 individuals in the three counties of Worcestershire, Shropshire, and Herefordshire for drink and drug-related driving just last December. This statistic underscores the critical need for responsible behavior on the roads during the holidays.
