What this means in practice is that the WindWings® technology, already noted for reducing fuel consumption by about 1.5 tonnes per wing each day—equating to roughly 4.7 tonnes of CO₂ saved daily on global routes—offsets the embedded emissions from its production and use in under six months. BAR Technologies completed the 10-month Impact Accelerator program, which leverages advanced LCA methods to push sustainability deeper into marine design and supply chains. The study confirms that WindWings® not only lowers fuel burn but also delivers verifiable environmental returns that can be tracked over time, addressing a common scrutiny point for new maritime technologies.

This finding challenges longstanding assumptions about the carbon footprint of maritime innovation. By quantifying the true environmental return on investment, BAR Technologies provides shipowners, regulators, and investors with credible data to support faster decarbonisation decisions.

Conducted in accordance with ISO 14044 standards, the LCA identified metalwork as the largest source of embedded emissions, accounting for 44%. In response, BAR Technologies has shifted procurement toward recycled-content DH32 steel produced via Electric Arc Furnace processes. Additional reductions come from optimizing tooling usage and revising composite layups.

We’ve integrated carbon literacy into every function, because sustainable performance must be measurable, verifiable, and repeatable.”
