Imagine if Nick Kyrgios had faced Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon final - a scenario that could have changed the course of tennis history. While Kyrgios admits that Novak Djokovic was an unbeatable opponent in that 2022 final, he believes he would have had a better chance against Nadal.
Leading up to Wimbledon, Kyrgios was on a roll, reaching the semifinals in Stuttgart and Halle. His momentum carried over to The Championships, where he made it to his first-ever Grand Slam singles final. But standing in his way was the formidable Djokovic, seeking his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title.
Kyrgios started strong, taking the first set. However, as the match progressed, he couldn't quite seal the deal in those critical moments, and Djokovic came back to win.
In a recent interview, Kyrgios reflected on his performance, saying, "I was solid overall, but I just couldn't get it done in the tie-break. Djokovic broke me when I had a 40-0 lead on my serve in the third set - that's just unbelievable. If I had played someone like Rafa, I think I would have had a better shot. But Novak is a different beast; he's been in so many finals, while it was my first. He's just too strong."
Interestingly, Kyrgios and Nadal were initially scheduled to meet in the Wimbledon semifinal that year. However, Nadal withdrew due to an abdominal injury, giving Kyrgios a walkover.
Since then, Kyrgios hasn't returned to The All England Club due to wrist and knee injuries.
So, what do you think? Would Kyrgios have had a better chance against Nadal? Or is Djokovic's dominance undeniable? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
